DAY 2 - CHOOSE YOUR TOPIC - 15 DAY SONGWRITING CHALLENGE

Welcome to Day 2 of the 15 Day Songwriting Challenge! In this video we're going to talk about where inspiration comes from and how to choose a topic for your song. If you're new to this challenge and would like to start from the very beginning, click here.

A very common question I get about songwriting is how to come up with ideas for a song. Where do they come from? How do you come up with one when you're stuck? How do you know if your idea is good? Watch the video below to learning all about how to choose a topic for your song! :)

So first let's talk about inspiration. Fickle fickle inspiration. It comes randomly and then disappears just as quickly! Do not rely on inspiration for writing a song! When you search for it, you will not find it. But there are steps you can take to be ready for it.

You must carry a small notebook or have an app on your phone at all times, so that in case you're struck with inspiration, you have something to write it down on! Be wary of the strategy of just trying to remember it.... I promise you, 98 times out of 100, you will forget it.

So then that leads us to, how do you choose a topic for your song?? Well, basically you can write a song about any at all! And this doesn't necessarily make it easier, because now you have limitless topics to choose from!

There are common topics that come up again and again in songwriting. I think this is a good place to start, because people like what's familiar, and if it's not broke, don't fix it! The free template below will help guide you to choose a topic that is popular but still relates to you and your situations.

If you'd appreciate having extra guidance on songwriting, consider joining us on patreon and downloading the complete Songwriting Book. For this day 2 of the songwriting challenge, I cover these topics in the book at greater length:
  • How long should it take to write a song?
  • Inspiration
  • Writing Without Inspiration
  • Two templates on choosing a topic
The last thing I want to say on this subject is that when you choose a topic, all you need to do is find something that you connect to and that you have emotions about. Usually if you can connect to your topic, then other people will be able to relate to it as well.

I hope you found this helpful! If you want me to hear your song, please tag me on instagram @helloabbylyons and use the hashtag #15DaySongwritingChallenge. I'm excited to hear what you write!

Good luck!
